Words to Describe Yourself

“Tell me about...” is one of the typical starter questions you need to prepare to answer when interviewing for a new position. Rather than answering with a canned, boring response or writing your resume in the same fashion, answer in a way that shows off your skills as value-added candidate for their enterprise. Questions like this help to confirm if you are good fit for the position and their company culture.

Simply pulling out the thesaurus will not yield the results that progress a career to the next level. The first step to knowing how to describe yourself, is to answer the question: who am I and what makes me unique in the workforce? Part of that answer leads us to ‘Personal Branding’, which will be discussed in a separate blog post.

Prepping your resume or for an interview

Keep these thoughts in mind when revamping your resume or prepping for an interview:

1. Action Words or Verbs

According to, an action verb is a verb, as run, think, or soothe, that expresses something that a person, animal, object, or process in nature can do rather than expressing a state of being.

2. Focus on the Positive (Turning the Negative into Positive)

With all of the discussions on career, speaking with a positive thread is the most important; negative energy can affect all aspects of your life, both personally and professionally.

3. Transmute the tired, overused words for fresh, noteworthy ones

Avoiding the stereotypical or run-of-the-mill words on your resume is a sure way for it to be tossed into the trash bin, physically and metaphorically. Being precise with your skill set helps you highlight your achievements and standout from the crowd.
